This client was developing a hand-held, motion sensing device and required a system to calibrate devices during the R&D phase. Calibration involved positioning the device in several dozen precise and repeatable orientations. The system also needed to be used in an office environment.
Thinking beyond the immediate request and considering future R&D and manufacturing needs, Andrews-Cooper proposed a flexible motion simulator that could be used for any application that required precise, repeatable motion profiles and orientation sequences. The device is mounted to a 6-axis Fanuc robot on a portable base. Utilizing one of Fanuc’s smallest six axis robots allowed high precision and speed while staying within the confines of office power (120vac single phase). Keyence safety-rated laser scanners provide 360° of protection from the robot motion without a bulky safety enclosure. LED back-lit panels provide clear and intuitive multi-color feedback to motion simulator operators as to the state of the system. Finally, a custom PC application was developed to allow intuitive programmatic control of and feedback from the robot. The Motion Simulator expedited the product development process by providing fast, flexible, precise, and repeatable motion and orientation sequences.
